Common Genetic Factors Found in 5 Mental Disorders

Major mental disorders traditionally thought to be distinct share certain genetic glitches, according to a new study. The finding may point to better ways to diagnose and treat these conditions.

Scientists have long recognized that many psychiatric disorders tend to run in families, suggesting potential genetic roots. Such disorders include autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia.

People, pets and diseases

Pets and people can share more than love. They can share diseases. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researcher Carol Rubin looked at cases involving dogs and cats.

Diseases that pass between animals and people range from mild to very serious. Rubin says pets can give us, for instance, ringworm, cat scratch fever, and rabies . She says humans can give animals things like multidrug-resistant staph aureus infection.

Beating birth defects before pregnancy - SALUTE DOMANI ∞ IL PORTALE DEL BENESSERE → salutedomani.com

Unhealthy habits may cause birth defects in babies during the first two months of pregnancy, which is often before a woman realizes she’s pregnant. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Stuart Shapira says it’s why healthy living is so important to women who could become pregnant. He says good health habits can reduce the risk of some birth defects. Shapira says the habits include not smoking or drinking, working toward or keeping a healthy weight, controlling blood sugar if a woman has diabetes, discussing with healthcare providers all medications and supplements, and taking 400 micrograms of folic acid each day.

“These behaviors should start even before a woman becomes pregnant, and continue throughout the pregnancy.”

Occhi, ipovisione: Rimborso terapia ranibizumab (Lucentis*) per Edema maculare diabetico, Occlusione venosa retinica, Degenerazione maculare neovascolare legata all'età

Aging faster with diabetes

“There’s been about 20 percent worse fitness levels in adults with diabetes as compared to adults without diabetes. That’s the case in teenagers, middle aged adults and older adults.”

Even if we’re healthy, we still lose about 10 percent of our aerobic ability each decade after about age 40 or 50. But diabetes takes an extra toll on our cardiovascular system, and makes it look older than it should. At the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Amy Heubschmann looked at data on people with diabetes:

Binge Drinking: A Serious, Under-Recognized Problem Among Women and Girls

According to a new Vital Signs report, more than 14 million U.S. women binge drink about 3 times a month, and consume an average of 6 drinks per binge. Drinking too much, including binge drinking (defined for women as consuming 4 or more drinks on an occasion) results in about 23,000 deaths in women and girls each year and increases the chances of breast cancer, heart disease, sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancy, and many other health problems.

Energy drinks versus energy

A study indicates energy drinks, which can have the caffeine of up to three cups of coffee, can have a boomerang effect on a person’s ability to stay awake.

At the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Robin Toblin looked at survey data on service members in Afghan war zones. She says those who had at least three energy drinks a day reported falling asleep more often on guard duty and in briefings than did troops who drank fewer.
